I checked out a you tube video and the HikeArizona.com website with Joe Bartels' description. I decided to make a quick exploratory hike on a relatively cool Friday morning. I found what I thought to be the parking area just past a curve on AZ 88, east of Tortilla Flat. My hike began at 10:15 A.M.
Across the road there appeared to be an old staging area, with a path to the creek. I hiked down, into, and through to the other side. I found a trail, which I followed to the southeast. The chimney shaped rock was sometimes in view to the southwest. I was determined to give it a wide berth to the east. In hindsight, I believe I went too far east.
The trail brought me to a ravine, wash, and a hill. The description had mentioned a ravine. However, I do not think this was the right one. I hiked down, explored a bit, and then began my return hike. By 11:30 A.M. I was back to the car. Down past some bushes, near where I had parked, there seemed to be a campsite/parking area. I hiked up to a lookout point to take a nutrition break before driving back to A.J.
When the weather cools, in a month or two I will return and concentrate on hiking a route closer to that chimney rock. If someone has a more detailed triplog, I would be interested in reading it. |
