This is my third hike towards Geronimo Head Mountain since Aug. 5, 2016. On the first hike I ended up in Peter's Canyon. On the second hike I took Monica and Ruth with me. We made it to the "Fragile" Arch Saddle.

On this third hike my goal was to reach the third saddle - elevation 2,750. I was solo this time. I just had to see what the view would be like from that saddle. I was not disappointed. The views to the north were awesome. The views south were daunting. Holy Mackerel! Lots of brush in those ravines. I wonder if one could hike up on the west side of the mountain and turn left at the top? It's either that or one of the ravines. I seem to remember other triplogs suggesting the ravine to the right. More research! On my next hike I will try to recruit one or more of my experienced hiker friends. How many do you, the reader, think should go?

To recap the hike - - -

I left home at 5:15 A.M., arriving at my parking spot around 6. I began the hike at 6:10 A.M. The first part I had done a couple of times so I was confident that I could get to the "fragile" arch saddle. I got there at 7:00 A.M.

I took a twenty minute break to rest my legs and get some nourishment. I think the parking area elevation was 1,750. The arch saddle was 2,450 feet.

At 7:20 A.M. I resumed my hike, reaching the 2nd non-descript saddle at 7:45. By 8:00 A.M. I arrived at Saddle 2,750. Although my GPS reading was 2,700. Every little bit helps. I had stayed down low from arch saddle to Saddle 2750. On the way back I got too low, so I had to back track. I found a trail up high which I followed to the arch saddle. Once again I got too low which caused me to go one hill to far to the east. I just did a line of sight to where my car was parked. The hike up to 2750 was easier than I thought. There were parts of a trail plus I could see the pass up ahead. I misread the arch saddle on the way down but made the necessary corrections.

I thank Joe Bartels, Kanode, Widowmaker, and others for directions, photos, and comments. I used them all. I could not have done it without you. A special thanks to Monica and Ruth for braving the hike to the arch. Their confidence in me meant a lot.

The temperature was cooler early. It was quite humid heading up to the arch. Then I had shade going to the 2nd and third saddles. My long sleeved shirt was drenched. So on the way down I just wore my t-shirt. The long pants blue jeans were a must for me. They were drenched as well. I look forward to making the next hike in October or November.
