Since I am very, very rarely in snow I was blown away by the scene. We took the truck and made our way up the road which was a bit scary as I had never driven in snow before. We pulled off onto the trailhead and as soon as my feet hit the snow I couldn't stop smiling. I had gotten some new winter boots for the snow which were amazing. Kept my feet nice and warm and I was so excited that I got to try them out. We quickly layered up and soon we were off. I couldn't contain my excitement and raced around in the snow while Nick walked calmly behind me. It was so much fun! I finally stopped running around about a mile in when I realized I had lost my phone- it had slipped out of my pocket. We overshot the turn off for the trail and had to backtrack but found it quickly enough. We reached the old mine and the burnt down trailer and I was in awe. These kind of things are so cool to find! Then we finally reached the swingset. Snow covered the ground and the mountains were covered and it was such an amazing experience to swing on the side of a mountain in my favorite mountains. Definitely my favorite hike so far.
The trail: The trail is an old road that is fairly easy to hike. A little uphill but not enough to kill the lungs. There is a turn off where you begin to climb up the mountain that is easy to miss. You will see a rusted gate that marks the entrance of the trail on the side of the mountain. This part of the trail isn't too bad to follow either. Not killer on the lungs. The trail is faint but still there and pretty easy to follow to the swingset. Once you find the old mine and the rusted trailer there is a jug on the ground by some bushes. You can follow that down and there is a faint trail that leads to the swingset which is on the left. The dirt road to get there however is a bit more hairy. There are rocks that jut out so a vehicle with clearance is a must. There is also a really muddy patch after the second cattleguard you cross over so beware of it. When it is snowing or warm it is nicer, but when it is rainy it is terrible. Definitely want four wheel drive on that part. Any questions just ask! |
