| no partners | | We hiked the roads on the eastern Mazzies to some abandoned mines and did a loop of 201 and 201A. We parked at the junction of 201 and 201A and headed north and then headed east on FR1683 to the Mercuria Mine. We found 2 mining camps, a prospect that looked more like a mine shaft that had a steady stream of water coming out of it, and then the main area of the mine. We didn't find a main open mine shaft of hthe Mercuria Mine, but it's hard to find things with some overgrowth around the edges.
We took a different road out from the Mercuria Mine to the first mining camp we found, which was overgrown with manzanita in some spots. Several spots here were single track and is definitely worth a one off look.
After that we just did the 201-201A loop, which was enough work. Uphill on 201 took me as much as on a normal trail. Downhill on 201A seemed like it had almost as many uphills in many spots. Ran into a 4x4 club of 9 drivers, mostly new Broncos and Wranglers owners. Interesting to see a big club like that heading up. Many asked if we needed water, but we were good. Wally joked later that we should have asked for beer, which had already crossed my mind when I heard them ask him for water.
At the lowpoint on 201 there was a culvert that drained a steady flow into the stream there. Topo Maps showed some mines or prospects nearby, but we kept moving.
Finished up and felt ok. Some steep sections but the overall loop portion of the hike is pretty solid. |
