My first trip up to the top of the mountain this year. I have a selective memory when it comes to this hike. I always remember the amazing views and beautiful scenery, but somehow forget the fact that this is a steep climb up. Oh well, the trail reminds you over and over and over.

I have always parked at the Mining Camp Restaurant for this hike. This was my first time parking at Lost Dutchman SP. The new normal now. It adds a little to the hike, but it’s the easy parts and my $7 goes to fund the park, so it’s worth it.

I got a semi-dark start, but the moon was so bright, it did not need to turn on my headlamp. I spend a little time trying to get some dark shots of the mountain, and then I was off. I saw a few cars in the parking lot and I saw some headlamps ahead of me. Usually, when I start this early, I see nobody. Oh well, I passed a few parties going up and a few passed me. I made it to the Siphon Draw and stopped to take some pictures.

The climb up the chute was as it always has been….rough and steep. I was a slow poke going up here. Stopping along the way to catch my breath. I have done so many flat or relatively flat trails lately, the climb up this one took a little out of me. Oh well, I made it up to the top and went directly to 5024.

I met a nice couple as they were going down. There are a lot cairns marking this trail now. I think it’s just a matter of time before 5024 becomes a crowded spot like the Flatiron. I spent an hour on the peak, wandering around, soaking in the views and taking pictures. I love the 360 degree views up here!

After a nice break and visit to 5024, I made my way over to the Flatiron. There was a lot of hikers up there today. Tis’ the season. I did my usual rounds along the edge and turned towards the chute for the hike down.

My knees really feel this hike down. The rock hopping and the steepness really give my tired old knees a workout. I was slow going down too. I used to pass a lot of other hikers…now it appears I am the passee, not the passer, ha ha

I made it to the Siphon Draw saddle and took some more pictures. When I was processing them, I noticed there was some old graffiti on a rock to the right of the trail. My posted picture shows in. Wonder what that is?

On to the Siphon Draw and down to the car. With the weather being so nice, traffic was heavy on the trail in both directions.

This hike was a hard one for me. I jammed my pinkie finger on a rock, scrapped my shoulder on the rocks climbing to 5024, and on the way down the chute, a fellow hiker had pulled back a branch and let it go right when I was stepping in. It hit me right in the head. I thought someone punched me! I had to sit down for a while and stop the bleeding before I started down again. And, my brand new big toenail, which had finally grown back from my Grand Canyon hike two years ago has turned dark again! Man! That mountain beat me up today! Oh well, I don’t take it personally, it’s the cost of admission sometimes!
I will head back up to the top before the summer heat gets too much.
