I have hiked at Usery Mountain Regional Park for many years, but I have never ventured over to the nearby Goldfields from Usery. This neat little loop was a real surprise.
Starting at the Meridian Trailhead, take the trail on the right that heads towards the saddle area of Peak 3004. I was expecting a little route following and lack of a defined trail, but it was very easy to follow the entire route. The hike up to the Bulldog saddle was gradual and was never really "steep". The view at the saddle give you a nice view of the Salt River valley.
The trail on the back side gets a little lost in the grass, but there are cairns all along the way. The hike around the back and up to the Pass Mountain saddle is not too steep. Once on the saddle, you pick up the Pass Mountain Loop Trail and head back to the Trailhead.
It's not quite the "cooler times", but I saw no other hikers along the first part of this hike. The solitude rating is good for that. Once on the more traveled Pass Mountain Loop Trail, I encountered a number of fellow hikers.
Next time you want a nice little loop in the Usery area, consider this one. |
