Lots of water. Lots of boulder hopping. Lots of photo ops.
We went to sign in at the TH register only to find it empty except for a pencil. Oh well, we signed in on the register enclosure.
Followed the HAZ Hike Description advice and kept to the left at the confluence. Mike Mattes and I went upstream as far as we could until we came to a deep pool with an impassable tangle of underbrush.
Slow hike with bushwacks, boulder hopping, and many photo ops impeding our progress! Big question - where are the ancient Indian ruins? All the indicators seem to right for ancient habitation. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knows where Hankat Cave is located.
We found the artesian well mentioned in many 4WD Trail Guides prior to finding the Wilderness TH. Also found an interesting wreck of a 40's vintage vehicle along the 4WD road towards the TH.
Passed a young couple making their way up the canyon when we were on our way out. These were the only people we saw in the Wilderness Area all day long... |
