| no partners | | I led a group of five - counting myself - on the Robber's Roost route on Friday.
I hadn't been up the Carney Springs trail before. After turning off onto it from Lost Goldmine, we encountered a fork to the right with stones across it. We continued left, but I soon realized - by consulting my GPS watch - that we were going the wrong way. We backtracked and followed one of the "blocked" paths, which soon proved to be correct. My guess is that had we kept going, we would have ended up at the Wave Cave.
We ate an early lunch above the "roost" area and then went down to look at the roost. We ended up at the top of a chimney above the roost - I couldn't figure out how to get down without descending this chimney. (And it wasn't something I wanted to down climb without being able to see it from the bottom first.) The rest of the group didn't seem to want to go down to the roost anyway.
After passing Fremont Saddle, we took a detour to look at Weaver's Needle from the overlook - it's a great view.
I think that my group enjoyed the Cave Trail the most. It's pleasant hiking with some surprises and a few exciting moments along the way.
For the most part, route finding was fairly straightforward, so long as you keep an eye out for cairns. There were several instances where there was more than one option - i.e. cairns leading somewhere else, but the GPS track soon set us straight. |
