| no partners | | My friend, Paula, and I set out to hike part of the Highline Trail (#31) while our husbands were off fishing Canyon Creek. We started from the parking area near the top of the Zane Grey Highway (aka Forest Road 289), which is about 16 miles east of the 87/260 intersection in Payson. It was a very pleasant hike with gradual changes in elevation. The skies were cloudy, though, so distant peaks weren't all that distinctive. The wildflowers were definitely "behind" what we're seeing around Phoenix at present, with dandelions being the most prominent species. Although it was a Saturday, we only saw 6 other people (3 self-proclaimed cow hunters, one mountain biker, and a couple backpackers). We stopped often to examine tracks and scat, take photos, look at unusual trees, and enjoy the scenery. We turned around and found that the return route-finding was more difficult as there were numerous off-shoots. In fact, upon downloading the route from our inReach, I noticed that we weren't on the "official" Highline Trail for the about 50% of the hike. Oh well, we had a wonderful morning. This would be a great hike for dogs and I can only imagine it would be better on a clearer day. |
