Parked at the Horton parking area, then headed over to Derrick Trail. It was 48 degrees when I started, but I was cold for maybe 5 minutes. PLENTY of evidence of deer and elk on all the trails today except for Horton. I saw a couple of deer near the beginning of Derrick, then several elk a few minutes later. Derrick is in nice shape, but I don't care much for manzanita.

Headed up Promontory Trail. If you like ridiculously steep and slick, and getting swarmed by giant ants at every log you climb over, then this is the trail for you. I swear, this trail gets steeper every time I hike it. There are some downed trees, and the trail gets vague in places, but there are usually cairns when you need them. I've always been able to find my way pretty easily on this one, but a gps route may be helpful to someone on it for the first time. There was still some snow when I reached the Rim--yay! I headed over to Promontory Butte, had lunch there, then meandered back to Promontory Trail. Staying further in from the edge of the Rim seemed to have less downed trees, and I was enjoying walking through the snow. The descent down Promontory was nearly as slow as the ascent, and it had warmed up a lot by noon.

Back on Highline, it was an easy, pleasant walk to Horton, where I finally saw my first people of the day. Horton is flowing like crazy, and was quite enjoyable to see. I hung around the spring for a few minutes, taking pictures, then headed down the trail, taking several picture breaks along the way. The creek is flowing full force all the way to Tonto Creek. I finished up at 3:00 to a full parking lot and people waiting for my parking spot.
