| no partners | | | The promise of shade and water was enough incentive to go north on I-17 on a Sunday. Drove north to Huckaby Trail #161 (Sedona) for a start just before 8am. Plenty of fleeting lizards to watch as I started the trail and a cicada on the path which, unlike the lizards, was not camera shy. Just as I was ready to complain about the lack of shade, I made the turn which provided a)view of the promised water b)a downward slope and c)tree shade cover. A few paths off to the water which were noted, but continued on the trail with every expectation of finishing the entire hike distance. Trail was clear and lush with gobs of prospective berries. Not much more on floral/fauna front. Heard music (ugh) and chatter as I came closer to the water, but by the first water cross, it became peaceful again. Fortunate to meet a couple of 20 somethings who described a couple of spots further in which were without human activity. Made it to the second water cross and lingered there along the water for quite a while as I had it to myself. Decided against the uphill finish at the bridge end and stayed by the water. Reasons for lack of trail completion a)my feet were happy in the cold water b)car was behind, not in front of me and c)the exposed climb to the behind me trail head loomed. Met a fellow solo hiker at the climb out and we distracted each other from complaining too much about the the warm, climb out. She appreciated my faster pace which lessened our glow time on the red rock soil. End of trail provided a)an empty container of human remains b)gold and c)pre-requisite crash delay on I-17. All that you expect and enjoy about a hike in the summer, north of Phoenix. |
