| no partners | | With a 1:25pm kickoff for the Steeler game and having not hiked for 5 weeks, I was determined to get a quick hike in close by. I hadn't ever hiked to the Wave Cave, and there were still a few trails left in Peralta Foothills that I hadn't done yet, so this seemed like the best bet.
I got a 6am start from the Lost Goldmine east TH and quickly noted that I forgot my hiking stick again. The 5 weeks off obviously resulted in the accumulation of some rust in preparations. After a half mile of looking for something to use as a replacement, I settled on a saguaro rib. Not the best thing, but good enough in a pinch. I didn't get much farther and I noticed that my camera again was on the fritz. the screen is all black and it won't take a photo. I had this problem last time, but after a couple of miles, it was ok. this time it didn't fix itself, so I had to use my phone as a backup camera. Looks like I'll need to get a new camera soon. At the very start in the morning it was actually a bit windy. That quickly went away as the weather warmed up.
I arrived at the Wave Cave about 7:15am. Astoundingly, no one was there yet. I was hoping that the crowds wouldn't be too bad, but I was pleasantly surprised to see no one there. I took the obligatory photos of the wave and made it out as the hordes were on their way. On the way down to the Lost Goldmine Trail, I saw two groups and one lone hiker on their way up.
Once I got back down to the Lost Goldmine Trail, I headed west and then south on the Don't Fence Me In Trail. There are some trails on the east end that were mapped that I wanted to do. Once I got there, I found out that they're just dirt roads. I hiked them anyway, then headed west again on the Outer Limits Trail, then north on the TD Trail to the Lost Goldmine again and back to the TH. Didn't see any other hikers after I was off the Wave Cave Trail. Nice to be back out and set some miles in after 5 weeks. |
