This is my first hike into this trail complex, other than the short ADA-accessible trail I did over the weekend. This section of the Gateway Trail begins a somewhat gentle climb up the foot of Mount Shasta, meandering through forest and manzanita. This area was basically a tree plantation, but now is part of an effort develop recreational opportunities around the City of Mount Shasta. Though a multi-use trail, it is definitely built for mountain biking, with some great engineered curves and gentle switchbacks. However, being a multil-use trail, there is nothing too technical. The grooming makes for a great trail run without too much chance of breaking an ankle.
Just before I left the Gateway Trail to catch 40N88X back to the trailhead, I came across an outcropping of exfoliating andesite. I have never seen this before, though I guess it’s quite common. |
