We didn’t do the ridgeline approach, instead we worked our way from the west to the north higher up which required scrambling a bit. From there we join the typical North Face approach. I was pleased that I managed the more technical parts of the route without needing a hand-line.
After lunch on the summit we continued down to where the trail crosses Chino Canyon. The water was flowing a bit which added to the adventure. We the scrambled our way down the canyon enjoying the views of pools and the puzzle of figuring out where to downclimb as to avoid rappelling. We had hoped not to get our rope out but we did finally run into a place where the downclimb had a tricky start so we opted for a 40-50 foot rappel. From there we failed to see an easy downclimb on the next section and instead rappel a short distance to get down a chockstone. From there we were able to continue without the rope. In all I got wet only up to my waist.
Many waterfalls and pools made for a nice spring outing! |
