Mrs OH took our two lady visitors from Oregon on a shopping trip and didn't want me along. Evidently they didn't want to hear my whining. So our upstairs neighbor and I headed to Spur Cross for a quick day hike on this beautiful crisp day with trailhead temperature in the mid 30s at 8:30 am. The Spur Cross Facebook Page warned that two days earlier the water in Cave Creek was too high to cross without wading so I had planned a hike up to Skull Mesa to avoid creek crossings. However we discovered that the creek was now much lower and the plank footbridge had just been re-installed at the Spur Cross Trail crossing. So not wanting to be embarrassed with my current lack of hiking fitness, I decided we would do the shorter and much less strenuous Elephant Mountain Loop. We got an OK from Ranger Kevin to enter the closed area on top of the butte for a quick look at the fortress ruins and off we went after being warned to not fall off the cliff. Didn't realize I looked so clumsy. The trails had dried up enough from the recent rains to not be muddy but still damp enough to keep down the dust. At the ruins I was just saying that I had never seen pottery sherds at this ruin when I looked down at the ground and discovered there were sherds everywhere. Perhaps the recent heavy rains had uncovered them.

On the return part of the loop we hiked back on the Dragonfly trail where we had to add a stepping stone to the creek crossing to avoid getting wet feet. I had lost my enthusiasm for desert hiking over the long hot summer but the returning green and the prospect of soon to come spring flowers has revived me.
