| no partners | | Just a late afternoon / early evening hike in McDowell Mountain Regional Park...
I tested out some new shoes - a pair of Astral Loyaks. Yes, this is a kayaking / water shoe, but they have sticky, rock gripping soles which are also thin and flexible. All of Astral's shoes have sticky rubber, but most of them have soles which are just thick enough to prevent me from feeling the ground as well as I'd like. I was really happy with the thinness of the Loyak's soles as this greatly increased my enjoyment of the many rocks underfoot on the Scenic Trail. On my last three hikes, I wore a pair of Astral Donners which provide significantly less ground feel. I really missed feeling the terrain below me!
I mostly like the Loyaks so far - I just wish that the toe box was a bit wider - if they were as wide as my Altras, they'd be perfect. They appear to have somewhat better thorn protection than my Altras, though time will tell if the soles are capable of thwarting thorns. (This is a common problem for many of the shoes that I might otherwise like.)
As for the trail conditions... well, it was pretty much the same as normal, though not quite as dusty as when I had hiked it last. I encountered a bunch of mountain bikers coming toward me on the Shallmo Wash Trail and several other hikers on Pemberton, but once I got onto the Scenic Trail, I saw no one else for the rest of the hike. |
