| no partners | | A night hike in MMRP...
Starting from Horse Staging Area, out Shallmo, right on Pemberton, right on Scenic, left on Pemberton, then back on Shallmo.
It seemed like I had the park to myself. I didn't see anyone else while I was out.
Lightning and some mild wind started after sunset. The wind was welcome because it had become somewhat buggy and the wind kept the bugs out of my face.
As I was descending the last big hill on Scenic, I saw a tarantula in the middle of the trail. Later on, I saw a scorpion, but it was scurrying away - too fast to get a photo. But then I saw another, larger, scorpion as I was heading back on Shallmo. It hung out in the middle of the trail and let me get a photo. I saw another scorpion, this one on the move, a short while later. There were also a few bunnies hiding under bushes and a packrat with a long tail with a puffy tuft of fur at the end. When I got back to the parking area, I saw an owl take flight; it had been sitting atop a saguaro.
I probably would have missed those critters had I done as I normally do and done the hike in the dark. But tonight I was testing out a new headlamp (Zebralight H600Fd IV) powered by an 18650 cell. Maybe I'll start using a headlamp more often... |
