Wanted to do another 18 mile day on the Cabin Loop Trail but yesterday's 20 miler wiped me out so I decided to do a shorter hike today on the U Bar Trail. This would mean doing a 5 mile in and back hike. Will have to finish up the U Bar and Barbershop Trail another day. The U Bar Trail starts out in Houston Draw at the Pinchot Cabin where the Houston Brothers Trail and the Fred Haught trail meet. The U bar heads east toward Barbershop Canyon then Heads south to the Barbershop trail. Very easy walking to Barbershop Canyon then it does something you don't see very much of on the Cabin Loop Trail, It drops down into a Deep Canyon. It is only 300 or 400 feet deep but after such easy walking along the Cabin Loop Trail it seemed like more. Very scenic canyon with the most water I've seen in any of the other canyons on the Cabin Loop Trail. The trail crosses Barbershop Canyon right at the junction with Merritt Draw then heads back out of the canyon. The excitement only lasts about 20 or 30 minutes but it's kind of like driving on an easy straight road for so long and then coming to a section of road that is narrow and winding, You get all excited because you get to do something different. This Canyon and Dane Canyon (about a mile further) are the only portions of the Cabin Loop Trails where you will work up a sweat and get the heart pounding. Once on top of the ridge on the other side of Barbershop Canyon it is more leisurely walking for about a mile before dropping into Dane Canyon. Not as deep as Barbershop Canyon but it will get your heart rate up. This is my turn around point for this hike,so it is back out of Dane Canyon and down and out of Barbershop again.
I would of liked to finish this trail on through but will have to do that another day. The cumulus clouds were building up nicely by noon and this area would get some rain later in the day. Ran into two hikers on the U Bar Trail, the first people I saw in the two days I was here (Did see some people on the Rim Road camping). The trail is fairly easy to follow and only a couple times relying on rock cairns or blazes to find the way. Didn't need to rely on the GPS at all.
