| no partners | | First hike of Autumn, done entirely in the last hours of summer, concluding about 40 minutes before the sun's vertical rays crossed the equator! It sure looked and felt like fall, either way. There was still some humidity or haze, probably from the storm last week, limiting visibility, but it was nice. I guess true fall conditions would be dry with long range visibility up.
Being a Saturday, fall or summer crowds were out on the mountain, and the summit was too busy for my taste. I got use to those alone on Humphrey mid-week summits, this year. That just meant I cut visit #110 short and opted for solitude and nature time at the spring, which was flowing nicely. The collection box was dry, but just up slope you'll find the real spring, which may be frozen in a few weeks.
My route was basically a reverse of Joe's June of 2013 GPS route and hike, but I cut some fat by hiking my winter route past where the trail meets the Dutchman, and went through the bomber wreck, then I cut some more fat by going through some meadow to meet the AZT further south. I cute 2.5 miles, which felt right. I moved a lot slower than I thought I would going down, primarily due to me repeatedly losing the social or game trail, and having to cross tons of down trees. This just meant I got to listen to more nuthatches and chickadees, which was nice. This was fine, as I took my excercise going up, where I was pleased.
