| no partners | | After checking out Arrastra Gulch, I headed up the road toward Howardsville and the turnoff for Cunningham Gulch. I drove past the Old Hundred Gold Mine and the turnoff for the Stony Pass Road. The Stony Pass Road is pretty historic and dates back to 1872, when it was completed from Creede to Silverton. Before the Denver and Rio Grande narrow gauge railroad reached Silverton in 1882 it was the principal way miners and others reached Silverton, coming from the east. I did not drive this road, but it would be an interesting thing to do one day.
I continued on a bit further before turning around and heading back down to Howardsville. The main attraction in the gulch is the Old Hundred Gold Mine (which offers tours) and the 1904 boarding house perched precariously high above on the side of Galena Mountain at the number 7 level of the mine operation. What those old timers did back in the day never ceases to amaze me.
After getting back to the main road at Howardsville it was on to Animas Forks. |
