Another Madera Canyon Meander..
Decided to start this hike a little lower down Madera Canyon than the usual location at the end of the road. I had never done the upper portion of the Nature Trail, so this was from the Amphitheater parking area. The trail promptly climbs up above the canyon to avoid private property. The result is some nice views before it drops back down into the riparian corridor and skirts by the Chuparosa Inn before reaching the Mt. Wrightson Picnic Area (Roundup). You can stay in the creek bed and avoid hiking along the usual route to the Old Baldy turnoff from the parking lots, reuniting with the Vault Mine/Carrie Nation Mine trail near the bench.

The trail up to Carrie Nation Mine is through a beautiful section of forest with plenty of shade. Gets steep in places, but what else is new? Since the monsoon storms are just beginning, the creek was dry except for a few seeps and a little flow at the mine. I heard trogon(s) several times along the hike, but as is usual, no sightings (elusive little devils). Encountered several birders on the way to Carrie Nation, as this is a real nice section for that activity (away from the more crowded Super & Old Baldy Trails).

On the way back down I decided to walk the road to my vehicle instead of returning on the Nature Trail. Reason was the cloud cover I enjoyed earlier was now gone and there would be more elevation gain that way with plenty of exposure. Plus, the road is a bit shorter and all downhill. I enjoyed passing by some of the lodging along the way.

Across the road from the Amphitheater parking lot is another access point for the Four Springs Trail to Kent Spring and beyond (with connectors to Bog Springs and the campground). One of the things that makes this area so appealing is the multitude of loop hike combinations available. :)
