| no partners | | A first trip to the South Eagletails for me. I got some directions from Alston and found Chumley's post and GPS track on Double Eagle; both helped me find the road in and the "trailhead" (there aren't really any trails).
I had thought I'd just do a "get acquainted" loop, over one low ridge, around Double Eagle, and back to the start. But the terrain was steeper than I'm used to and it took me a long time to get to the top of that low ridge. Lots of vertical rock, ramps, drops, etc. - I was glad when I got to the nice area on top. The plan was finally scuttled when I saw the drop down the other side was not going to be any easier.
I ended up retreating back to the east...not the same way I came up though I eventually joined it near the bottom. Plenty of drama negotiating one drop off in particular.
I was impressed with the area: as Chumley said in his triplog, generally good access, high clearance only needed for that last mile or two. The desert here is attractive, quite green at the moment. When I return though I'll limit myself to walking the edges of the hills. |
