Cool, windy, and partly cloudy to start. One group of hikers was finishing up their hike as we started, and another group was starting at the same time as us. The other group that was starting headed up the wash, while we made our way steadily uphill on the trail on the ridge. After about 30 minutes, heavy clouds had rolled in, and it got colder and windier. The other group had headed up the ridge to the the west, and I kept watching them to see how they planned on getting through the cliff band near the top. As we reached the steep slope below the cliff band, the wind continued to increase, but at the top of the slope, we were mercifully shielded from the wind. The other group had reached the cliff band, and had traversed towards us—there was no secret way they knew about, so I guess the only decent way up is the standard route. So they got a steeper climb and longer traverse just to end up at the same place—no thanks, I’ll stick with the standard trail. It started to snow just before the short climb/scramble through the cliff band, and by the time we reached the top, it was snowing pretty hard. The other group turned around before the scramble. We had a snowy walk across the top over to the high point. No real views today, but it was neat to be up there in the winter weather. The scramble back down was slippery, but nothing terrible, and it seemed like a fairly quick walk back downhill. The clouds had parted by the time we finished, and the wind had mostly died down. The road from the highway all the way to the trailhead is in very good shape right now, and should be driveable by any vehicle if the road is dry.
