This entailed taking Trail #8 from the 40th St. Trailhead south up and over the ridge down and around until I picked up one of the unmarked trails leading back to trail 100. I arrived at a full parking area as I expected for a beautiful afternoon but managed to find a spot anyway and got underway shortly before 1:45pm. I crossed trail 100 and was on my way up the trail. Soon poppies and lupines began to show up and I snapped pictures along the way. At one point I glanced at a cactus and seeing a bird I zoomed in with my camera and was thrilled to see an American Kestrel! He was rather far away so I got a couple of so so photos. I finally made it to the top of the ridge and took a breather on the bench. I started down the other side and right away noticed the proliferation of scorpion weed on both sides of the trail prompting me to label it "Scorpion Weed Alley". I continued on enjoying the beauty of the area, took an unmarked trail back to trail 100 and then back on #8 finishing up about 4:55pm. I was dragging a bit but it was worth the effort. Surprisingly I encountered only a handful of hikers and bike riders. |
