The weather was perfect for a morning hike in the Superstition Mountain Foothills so I hit some familiar trails to see what's blooming. The Palo Verde are still wearing a bright yellow coating of springtime flowers that stand out against the green foliage of nearby shrubbery, while the Mesquite has the usual oblong flower that always attracts hundreds of bees. Still holding out is the Ironwood trees that will be covered with thousands of fragile, yet subtle violet blossom.
The Giant Saguaro are sprouting buds and some even changing to the stunning bouquet of white flowers at the ends of their long arms. The Prickly Pear, the Hedgehog and the Stag Horn cacti have flowers in the early stages of blooming and will soon decorate the desert floor with their yellow, red and golden blossoms.
It truly is an amAZing time of year to be out enjoying the desert, but too soon, we're going to be contending with the summer's heat and the potential dangers of the Monsoon storms. But until that time comes, I'll still be out, with my camera, enjoying the beauty that confronts me at every turn in the trails.
