It was already about 70° by the time I started around 0930 .Explored a little of Derrick but then decided to reward myself twice with out and back on the Horton Creek trail, very nice, mostly shaded, good tread ,easy grade, enjoyed hiking with the sound of falling water and views of the cascading water. Some areas of the trail look like they could get muddy with a good rain shower, fyi the sign at the junction with the high line trail is falling apart. Met 3 hikers coming down on my way up, one hiker and his dog named Buddy caught up with me at the high line junction, saw 4 hikers on their way up as I descended. Fascinated with the springs and how the water emerged from the” little grotto “ making a hum underground before tumbling down the rocks , more noted on the side with no pipe. Properly motivated by dark clouds and thunder coming over the rim only took about an hour to return to parking, most of picture taking was on the way up anyway. I called the water flow medium but may be a bit less. Hope the door gets fixed at the pit toilet at the HC TH about a hundred flies in there, now I know why I was seeing tissue paper along the trail. Can see how the summer weekends could be mobbed, today about half the cars in the not busy lots were there to fly fish not hike. Only wildlife were a couple of squirrels but noted two game and fish paddy wagons leaving the campground area when I arrived. |
