| partners | | Little Granite Mountain/Upper Pasture/White Rock Springs Trail to Old Juniper Tree in Prescott today. 10 miles, 1900aeg
While there is a shorter way to get to the tree, we chose this route to get a good mix of the area. Saw just a handful of people on the Little Granite Mountain trail; no one on the other two trails and no one else at the tree. Note: there are tons of cairns leading to no where on the trail when you approach the Old Tree. (We know because we followed a few). Trust me: the turn off from the main trail is very obvious!
On June 18, 2013 the Doce Fire was threatening the town of Prescott and the Granite Mountain Wilderness. The Granite Mountain Hotshots were tasked with protecting the Old Juniper or Grandfather Juniper tree - a giant alligator juniper tree believed to be thousands of years old. After the fire passed, this giant stood amongst the scorched landscape. A week after they saved the tree, all but one of the crew was killed in the Yarnell Hill Fire. |
