On Saturday while hiking towards Pinchot TH, we started noticing smoke and then actual fire up ahead. We arrived to find the trailhead partially ablaze with no one else around. We had seen signs stating "Wildfire Ahead: Do Not Report" early on during the drive in, but it was still surprising (and unsettling) to be that up close and personal with an actively-burning wildfire. Especially when the wind picked up and the embers started flying. It was mostly old stumps burning down but still...
After checking out Pinchot & Aspen springs (both of which I loved - especially the desert columbines growing around Aspen), we stopped to make camp near McFarland spring. That night while falling asleep I was jolted awake by the very loud barking of an alarmed elk - a noise I've never heard before. It took a few moments to shake off the sleep and realize it wasn't the large angry demon-possessed dog my half-asleep brain immediately concluded was standing outside my tent.
The washout on Fred Haught was passable with a steep but quick bypass down and around the giant gaping void that was once a road.
Had a great hike out Sunday through the ferns and back around to General Springs. I loved this area and would like to check out the east loop sometime. Good times in a beautiful place with great people as always.
