| no partners | | Started from Wash Park TH at 7:00, first car in the lot. The road in still shows signs of last year's colossal flood in August that destroyed it. Made the climb and road march to Houston Bros, almost zero traffic. Hung a right on Barbershop then stopped at B-shop spring for a refill. Very light flow from under the rock but clear. Saw 3 guys looping the opposite direction. Barbershop creek crossing was dry, but there is a mucky pool nearby. Dane was dry at trail crossing. Ran into Kyle "Tough Boots" and Michelle along this section. About 20 minutes later the skies opened up, I took some shelter down in a dry creek bed and waited an hour. Lots of rain and a blanket of hail with plenty of lightning. Then, onto Dane spring, totally vacant, and set up camp. Quiet night with off and on light rain. Had a solid fire though for the first time in 3 months. Next crossing of Dane was dry and campsite empty. Barbershop crossing was flowing and some folks camped there. Made good time to Pinchot and found plenty of good water to filter. Fred Haught springs, old cabin area was dry. Fred Haught has plenty of water, sometimes murky and still, sometimes almost clear and flowing. No one camped anywhere.
Clouds were moving in and I heard a distant rumble of thunder as I passed Gen Springs cabin so I sped up my pace down the Col Devin. Lightning got a little too close at one point, I probably should have hid for a bit. Got back to the car just as the rain came. I had another flat tire. I don't know what it is about this place, 2 flat tires and a washed out road in as many trips. |
