In July 2017 Wally, Andy and I hiked the Fred Haught Trail up to the Pinchot Cabin and back. On the way back we got caught in a lightning storm and skipped taking the short side trip to the illustrious Fred Haught Cabin. Last November, Wally and I hiked an 8 mile section of the AZT #27 from the north, starting at SR87. That left a little gap of the AZT adjacent to the Fred Haught Trail that I didn't hike. So for this trip, we started again at General Springs and headed north to where we stopped last November.

Being that it's officially fall in AZ, the temperature in the morning was a little brisk. No color in the trees, although most of trees we saw were pines. The ferns have died, so they're brown. There was some other plant on the ground that was red, not sure what that was. I never noticed that in the summer, so I'm thinking they turn color also?

I really enjoy this area of AZ. Not alot of elevation gain walking through the pines, but we kind of made up for it with the length of the hike. The weather was perfect, including really clear air that enabled you to see very far. We noticed that part more on the ride home. I'm not gung ho on getting all the AZT hiked, but I would like to explore more of the next section up to Happy Jack and further up to Flag.

Route Scout glitched out on me again at the 3 mile mark and would't record until I checked the screen. After that it was ok, but i have a straight line in my track along one section.

Saw 3 whitetail bucks in the morning along FR300, and also 2 elk cows. The glare in the morning light made driving FR300 a challenge in spots. In the afternoon, we think we spotted where the ATV accident occurred last weekend along FR300. Looks like some freshly burnt brush there as well as a sharp bend in the road by a cliff.
