| no partners | | It was a warm winter day today and I wanted to check on the conditions at the Hualapais. To my knowledge, I think it has been some time since it has snowed up there. The trailhead area was completely clear and I began my hike up the road. Some patches pretty quickly on the road, which was a little disconcerting. About 0.65 miles in, the road was completely hard packed with snow/ice. If it was crunchy or soft that would be one thing, but I decided to turn around because it was hard and an ice skating rink. Not my idea of a good time.
I headed over to the Dean Peak road, which has been on my interest list for some time. That road appears to be completely in the sun, so a perfect day to check it out. I started through the RV parking lots and eventually made my way to the road. I didn't have the oomph in the legs today... some days are like that. I like the road, it is quite nice, with wide open views back towards Kingman. The road turns into the forest and ends at a junction between two radio towers. I proceeded left to the higher radio tower first. Tight switchbacks up. The sign on the locked fence said Getz Peak. I didn't know there was a Getz Peak, but now I do. I got a good look at the ridge that leads to Dean Peak... it looks like a bit of an effort. Went back down, then to the right and up to the other tower. This is more shaded, so there was some patches of snow/ice, but nothing that couldn't be negotiated. This tower is at the start of the ridge to Dean Peak.
I am glad I found a colder weather option for a steep trail and I'll investigate the off trail to Dean Peak in the near future. |
