This is pretty much the only lower elevation/warmer option in the winter that is a steep trail and 45 minutes drive or less. Bull Mountain is even steeper, but that is off trail, so you really can't grind in the same manner. Mayswell Peak takes 2.5 miles of hiking to get to the steep parts, which isn't really my cup of tea.

With the latest storm, the road is in poor condition and has huge voids in a good amount of areas. There was some ponded water on Route 66 just prior to the turnoff, but I was able to pass through with no issues with a low to the ground Kia Forte. They had a sign up, so I imagine it was much worse a couple days ago. There were also a few cones at one eroding spot on the highway.

I pushed the first pass from the get go, jogging at times. Unfortunately, that really hurt me proceeding through the 0.11 mile/170' section. I was out of gas and really struggling. Almost even considered stopping on a couple sluggish steps. Made it up in a little over 17 minutes and took in the views for a few minutes. Headed back down and the softness of the ground from the recent rains was much appreciated on the downhill. Ate a bar, hydrated and put on my winter head gear for pass #2. I didn't jog any of this one, just the little downhill portion. Up a little over 19 minutes this time and finished right at sunset.

I like the drive here, like the scenery and will be back again. Great road for conditioning. You can also go off trail to the higher radio tower, if you are so inclined. I've been up there a couple times and it has really nice views.
