This massacre took place November 5, 1871. A stagecoach was ambushed west of Wickenburg leaving 7 passengers dead. There has been extensive research done by the American Pioneer & Research Project about this incident and the mystery surrounding the graves at this site and how many poor souls are actually buried there.
There are 10 marked graves, one being female, and, at least, another 6 to 8 unmarked graves. Some of the graves are easily discernible, others are not.
I suggest researching the massacre before heading out to this location as it makes the whole experience more surreal.
As for the drive/ride in. I parked my car at the gate that displays a sign informing you that you are entering state trust land. I jumped on my bike from there and road on in. Any car can make the first 4 miles but then the road turns rough and some areas are full of sand. I've gotten use to pushing my bike through this stuff!
There's an old abandoned ranch about a mile before the site. There are supposed to be 2 unknown graves here also but I have not been able to find them.
One final thought, there was another grave near the ambush site of Coyote Red Feather, 1871. I have yet to find this grave! I know it's there but I'm thinking the old marker and stones have been washed away in flooding. |
