I really really wanted to see what Canyon Diablo was all about so my trusty little mountain bike carried me 3 miles down that rough rocky road off the I-40 where the remnants of the town still exist. In spite of all the walls and foundations that permeate that desolate area, what I found most fascinating were the hundreds of rusty cans that are scattered EVERYWHERE! They are visible from the entrance of "Hell Street" and all the way out to the walls of the canyon itself.
I wish there was more evidence of Boothill Cemetery. Only one grave is identified and I spent a good 45 minutes scouring the landscape and studying GPS before I found it. It is hard to imagine that nearly 2,000 people lived in that town at one time. What life must have been like there! |
