| no partners | | After two non-hiking days in a row it didn't matter how hot it was/would get I was going to get out and hike. But as usual I had no plans so I just started driving along Bush Highway watching the car outside temp steadily drop, and the moment it began to rise I would stop and start hiking. Which happened just north of Usery Pass Road.
I started hiking up a wide wash but soon tired of trudging in the sand. So from then on I rambled up and down a series of ridges, avoiding washes as much as possible. Eventually I decided to stop the random wandering, pick a destination and head for it. After choosing the saddle just north of Peak 2180 I followed a more-or-less direct route to it.
The last two times I had crossed this saddle, I traversed west-to-east, dropping down into the "bowl" on the way down, so this time I decided to continue climbing north from the saddle to the end of the ridge, then take the longer descent.
Once back down I followed a well-defined horse trail until I crossed my earlier path and again did more rambling over-hill-and-dale until I had no choice but to follow the wash back to the car. On the return trip I managed to encounter a series of remains of various wildlife. Who knows what led to their demise, but with the higher number of dead animals I've encountered this year I can't help but think the heat had more to do with it than the last few years. |
