Started at the AZT#30 TH and made my way to their camp. Bugs all up in my face. The trail runs along a small hillside for the first couple miles through a medium dense forest. After this it follows an old railroad bed which is pretty cool because a lot of the 100+ year old railroad ties are still there on top of a mound of bedrock that makes its own path through the trees. Crazy to think of a train coming through and breaking the silence of the forest with a thunderous roar so long ago.. The trail follows the railroad grade for a few miles and then ditches it and heads northeast. Bug bites all over Luna's belly. After not seeing anyone for a couple hours, the Lake Mary Road area was bustling. Passed through the nice AZT gate on the other side of the road and checked the GPS. Surprisingly, found the camp pretty easily among the now small village of people camping near Ashhurst Lake. Threw back a few cold ones and then back to the TH, just could not stay for long and tired of getting attacked. Great weather for a hike but you gotta keep moving because those gnats dont quit. |
