I've never seen so much traffic on the 88, but nobody put any effort to go more than 10 feet off the road, so our sunset fire view was without company. Except the resident rattlesnake that lives on this trail.
By the naked eye, it's not as explosive as I had expected. But it is active over dozens of miles. The most active fire seemed to be around Cane Spring Canyon, perhaps heading south toward El Recortado. Lots of heavy smoke illuminated by flames just out of view from our vantage point. Wind is pushing the opposite direction, but it might burn south to the river/lake corridor as I doubt there is any effort at suppressing it there.
Visible flames across all four peaks, to the highest points, the saddles, and the ridges both north and south of the peaks. For many miles. An active line appeared to be burning near the beeline up toward Sunflower and Mt. Ord. While the whole thing isn't on fire at once, areas of visible fire spans dozens of miles.
As always, I can't get my camera to take night photos. Luckily, I combined with @juliachaos, who has a camera who can do that, but can't ever transfer them to a computer. Teamwork FTW!
A sad but still impressive view. So far, the Goat is still intact. |
