JJ agreed to shuttle me from the Gooseberry Springs trailhead on the north to the southern trailhead at HWY 87. Thanks John! I set off Friday morning at 0915 hoping to get more than half way through the section before camping for the night. I ended up hiking 18+ miles and found a pretty nice place to camp among the pines.
Saturday I swung by Pine Spring to add a liter of water to finish the hike with. Along the way I saw a herd of antelope running through the woods. I counted seventeen. There were probably more. Later I spotted a single coatimundi.
Towards the end of the hike I came upon Shawn (SRedfield), Paintninaz, and the AZT trail crew installing a mountain bike fence crossing next to one of the wonderful AZT gates. There are 18 gates on this section of the AZT. All are fantastic and much appreciated.
I wrapped up my hike Saturday at 1 PM and headed home. Tested some new gear on the hike and it all worked better than the owner lol. Saw some heavy smoke coming from the Sierra Ancha? driving down from Payson. The fire looked like it was taking off. Some green is starting to appear on the lower parts of Mount Ord which were badly burned in the Bush fire.
Had a nice two days in the woods. |
