Route Scout Route Recorded  on Route Scout Popup | MapDEX
Drove up from Scottsdale Saturday morning for a jam packed adventure weekend! Found an awesome campsite nearby that was completely secluded (minus a mid evening elk parade!) then ate lunch before proceeding to the route. The road was in pretty good condition most of the way to the start of the route. (You just park off to the side of FR 321). You really have no warmup with this one; it went straight into dropping down into the canyon, which was tough for me because my legs were feeling super stiff. It’s really steep and had lots of dead trees to climb over, mild scrambling/downclimbs, so just pick your personal preference for the path. Once down into the canyon, we saw lots of foliage popping! Mostly yellow leaves with a few scatterings of red throughout the canyon. It’s quite overgrown and not very scenic at the beginning, but just keep going because it does get prettier! We ran into some day old bear poop and some large bear prints in the mud, but did not actually see any bears. :( The water levels were low, but the canyon wasn’t completely dry. You could mostly keep your feet dry with some good rock hopping skills. There was one section where the bypass was too sketchy for me, but James scaled a tree to get down while I waded in the water. On his way down from the bypass, he found an old box with carrots on the lid. We definitely wanted to check the contents and it was filled with some really random stuff but we did find a register. The last signature was in 2014 so that was super cool to sign it and add a few notes about how crazy this year has been! I’d anticipate most people taking the water route, so I bet many have passed the box without realizing it. The canyon walls were very pretty as we kept going and we really enjoyed it! We continued on downstream until the exit route. The exit was really steep, with some scrambling and route finding involved; terrain was loose and it was easy to slip. Alas, we did finally make it to the road and completed the loop with a nice flat walk back to the car. We had the whole canyon to ourselves, and a prime campsite nearby so it’s a success in my book!
