Waypoint success (i.e. marking something ancient) was about 50:50 and I passed some small ruins. There was pottery almost everywhere I went all day but of course concentrated near the ruins. At the end of the day I passed a fairly large "L-shaped" ruin which I've found to be a common design in the area south of Wupatki. It sits on a small hill with a nice 270deg view, its back to Merriam Crater.
Much of the walk was along Youngs Canyon which made a good impression. It's not very deep, with white rock terraces on the south side and some black basalt on the north side. I was surprised to find petroglyphs (mainly faint) on the basalt. The canyon bottom consisted of black "cinder sand" with reddish sand/dirt just above on both sides. |
