| no partners | | I wanted to go back to the Petrified Forest and check out a mesa top I didn't have time to look at on a previous trip. The bottom of the mesa had an impressive array of petroglyphs and I thought there must be something on top. Also I just like walking the back country of PFNP.
Well I enjoyed the walk but there was nothing on top. Rocks and grass.
I felt a little let down so I imagined a modified return route that would take me past a nice petroglyph site I'd been to before. This was fun and a little bit of a challenge since I'd classify walking in the area this way: about 50% completely flat in washes, ~30% undulating pebble-covered mud that's fun to walk on, ~15% pebble-covered mud that's too steep to walk on, and ~5% rimrock and tumbled rock that's impassable. Anyway after a number of mistakes I got there. I found a couple things I'd missed the previous visit.
I had the same issue free-lancing a route back to the car. That 20% worth of barriers caused some detours but in the end it worked out better than I expected. I always enjoy daytrips up there even if the drive time exceeds the walk time. |
