My sister and her hound dog decided to join the party. When we got to what I figured was the Lyle Canyon trail, I decided, not knowing how accustomed they are to potential off-trail hiking, that we should just go up Peterson and reduce the mileage. Should've driven further up the road, oh well...
Once on the actual trail, we found it to be remarkably well groomed, with evidence of regular maintenance. It was steep for the first mile or so, then starts contouring through some nice pine forest the rest of the way to the crest. The crest trail was nice, and the portion past the saddle that traverses along the steep west slope felt like real high mountain terrain.
More nice shaded forest through Pine Park and up the peak. Sister decided she had enough about a half mile from the summit, was not able to convince her otherwise, so I was on my own for a quick up-and-down (the dog definitely felt left out).
The way down was enjoyable, and we decided to check out Peterson Ponds en route, which we had bypassed on the way up by staying in the creekbed. Pretty cool spot, Peterson Spring is within the enclosed pond, which was the nicest, and there was actually some flow despite having been a dry year. Also found the remains of a structure (foundation carved into the hillside, plus part of a roof lying on the ground) just to the west of the enclosed area.
After returning to the vehicle, we decided to stop by Sunnyside, which was a worthwhile 15 or 20 minute diversion. |
