| no partners | | I decided to start the year off by bagging a couple of peaks, so I did these 2:
1) Lone Mountain/EJ Peak
2) Usery Mountains Highpoint/Peak 2972
I began by hiking up to Lone Mtn/EJ, and then when I got back to the parking lot I crossed the road and hiked to the Usery HP.
Lone Mountain/EJ Peak
This was a nice little hike -- short, scenic, and steep. There were a few people out on the hike, but not very many. The parking lot was full, so I was afraid that the trail would be crowded; but appears most people were mountain biking instead of hiking.
There were nice views of the Mazzies, Goldfields, and Supes -- I enjoyed this hike.
Usery Highpoint
I followed one of the tracks that @adilling posted, and it turned out to be a good and very efficient route. I figured that I would be doing some bushwhacking, but that was not the case. I started out in a wash, then went on a trail that was mostly used by mountain bikers, and then went on a use trail the rest of the way. The wash was a bit sandy, but not too bad. The mountain bike trail was nice to hike on, although there must have been 50 mountain bikers along the way (note to self: next time, go during the week instead of a weekend, especially a holiday weekend). The use trail was easy to follow, although it was steep and slippery in a couple of places. On the way down I maintained 5 points of contact in one stretch.
Synopsis
I enjoyed this hike -- it was a clear day and the views were nice. It was a bit windy on top of Usery, but other than that it was really nice hiking weather: sunny with temperatures in the low 50's. |
