| no partners | | It was a nice day and I decided to go out and hike this peak, which I had not done before.
I parked not far off of Highway 87; I could have driven another 0.4 miles to the end of the road, but since this was a relatively short hike anyway, I decided to walk the extra distance. You'd need a 4WD vehicle to go the extra 0.4 miles, but most any vehicle could make it to where I parked.
After leaving the road, the trail was easy to follow until I decided to turn off and go up the NE slopes of Diamond Mountain. The off-trail was fairly steep in some places, but the footing was really good for the most part. There was a bit of vegetation to deal with, but it wasn't all THAT bad -- the worst of it was shrub live oak that was mostly between knee and waist high.
Once I got on top, I located a summit cairn and a summit register log. I also located the "Diamond" benchmark, which was not very far away from the summit cairn. However, since I am not the sleuth that @FLYING_FLIVER is, I did not find any other survey markers.
When I was at the summit cairn, I noticed a rise that is about 500 feet south of the cairn that looked to me like it would be the high point of the mountain; so I headed over there to tag it. According to my GPS, it was 10-15 feet higher than the summit cairn.
Views on Diamond Mountain were really nice -- I could see lots of recognizable landmarks in the Mazatzals and Superstitions.
I went back more or less the way that I came up. I think that my descent route was more efficient than my ascent and had less vegetation to deal with.
This is a fun little hike if you don't mind some off-trail hiking and associated route-finding. |

| | There was some water dripping very slowly, and there was some mud around, but you'd be hard pressed to salvage any drinking water at this spring. | | _____________________
