| no partners | | I had been wanting to do this hike for a while, so I decided to head out to the Weaver Mountains near Yarnell and hike up to Weaver Peak(elevation of 6,574' and prominence of 2,134'), which is the highpoint of the range.
I believe that Weaver Peak is on state land, but access to it goes through private property. I had called the landowner and gotten permission to park and hike on his land to get to the peak. The only thing that he asked was that I check in with him when we got there and check in again when we were leaving so he would know that we made it back.
After checking in with the landowner, I drove on a farm road that leads to a stock tank. I could have driven to the tank but I decided to park about 1/4 mile from the landowners house and walk the rest of the way to the tank. This added about 2.5 miles RT to the hike, and was the only easy part of the hike.
There is lots and lots of brush to deal with on this hike -- it was more brushy than Coyote Peak the week before. There is no trail whatsover, and there are no cairns out there; it is definitely a route finding challenge. I thought that the route finding was more difficult on the descent than the ascent; usually it is the other way around.
The landscape there is littered with boulders, and we did a lot of rock scrambling on the boulders, since the rocks and boulders were largely brush free.
I chose a route that looped around a bit and approached the peak from the NE. I can't say that it was a great route, but it looked a bit less steep on the climb to the summit than it would have been by taking a more direct route. The brush got heavier at about 5,900' as we made a climb up to the summit.
This hike is a lot tougher than the distance and elevation gain suggests. With over 2,000 feet of prominence this peak attracts attention from peakbaggers, and from reading names in the summit register log it looks like only peakbaggers do this hike. |
