|Big Dick has been on my list for years! With no frame of reference, I had no idea what to expect, but I was hugely excited about it. I found no beta so it was obvious we'd have to go in dry. It started out slow but after about two miles exploring along the base, it rose quickly! I had no idea if there would be a way but was pleasantly surprised to find a doable slot. It curved up and to the right.|
It wasn't as hard as I thought it might be, but it lasted about 90 minutes so that was satisfying. We took a break at the high point and shared a beverage before moving on to Squaw. As had been the case yesterday, the wind was strong and we spent most of the afternoon getting blown.
We had planned to circle the base of Squaw but after a later than planned start we cut it short. After a little bit of hoodoo we headed over to the tank where we were able to get all wet after popping through a hole we didn't know about.
Daylight was getting short so we altered the plan to go down a different way, and decided to return the way we came.
There were some desert pricks along the way, but nothing too hard and it didn't last too long. Near the bottom the footing got soft. We were happy to reach the trail head and finish.
This was just the tip of what you can get to from here. Big Dick to Old Smokey would be a fun day. A full high-country traverse from Signal to Big Dick might work too, with a long shuttle. Who knows? Lots of options in this playground!
