I penciled in 45 minutes as the longest it should take, and was happy to tally the #575th best time on HAZ at 32min up. From there, it was an enjoyable 2 hour break before stumbling downhill by the illumination of the valley's non-certified-dark-sky-city status. Add a few minutes to either end for distant parking, and I'm looking at a possible spot on the podium!
In the year since I last did this, there are 14 more miles of concrete steps, trail erosion where it hasn't been paved yet and random concrete trail edging standing a yard or two uphill from where a million footsteps have destroyed what once was. One day they'll set concrete the whole way and just call it the Pie Steps. By then, the transformation from a pristine desert peak to a tourist trap with a view will be complete!
But, oh, those views! Not a bad look at the valley from up there either. |
