What a fun area! The geology was amazing and varied, there was a surprising amount of water in the drainages, and we were able to find a way around every dryfall we encountered. A bunch of these spots would be something to see after some rain. Alas, that doesn't happen a whole lot here!
We started near Horse Tanks, a nicely developed wildlife watering hole that takes advantage of the geology. My plan was to follow the drainage to the top but there were a few too many falls and we opted to climb the adjacent ridge. This 700-foot climb was not exactly the "easy" hike we planned.
From the top of the ridge we made a line toward Bandy Tanks, another impressive geologic feature with some light flow of water. We dropped down to a delightful slickrock drainage and headed downstream to the fantastic area around Arch Tank before making a solid climb up over a ridge.
Here we enjoyed our Sunday morning peak beers before dropping down into another striking rock-lined valley following the bottom downstream until cliffing out near Gray Tanks. From here we found a great route up and over a final ridge before dropping back down to the truck.
We climbed a few good hills and with only some occasional sheep trails to follow definitely got our money's worth despite the relatively short mileage tallied. I'd really like to come back to this area again. |
