| no partners | | With early winter being a full-sized dud so far, I decided to take advantage of the first significant snowfall on the rim (even though it was less significant than forecast, which is typical for the first storm after a long dry spell). The forest service closes roads on the rim in winter, so if you're able to catch them before they close, or if it snows in late spring after they've opened, you get to access a little bit of terrain that is more challenging to get to on foot when they're all closed.
So, taking advantage of the still open roads, I had an absolute blast making taco tracks out to Bear Canyon Lake where the new snowfall reached a fun driving depth of only about 6 inches, which also eliminated the need for any flotation on foot.
Clouds lingered, there was an occasional gusty wind, and the temperatures stayed cold enough to keep the snow clinging to the trees and no afternoon melt kept the rain jacket in the pack.
An all around great day loitering across the plateau.
