I'm liking this area! It's amazing how many times I've driven to Payson in all the years here, and never stopped into anything in the northern Mazatzals besides Barnhardt. I'm thinking I'll come back here in the late fall -- whenever the sycamores are turning -- and check out the mines; wasn't sure at the time which road to go up to find them, so I just stayed on 25A. There's still a good amount of water in the creek to look at and listen to, and about 2/3 of the hike was in the shade (which was good, because it didn't stay cool for very long). Went to the end of the road and the fixer-upper van, then continued up the trail for 10-15 minutes before turning around. Little lavender-blue moths everywhere down near the water. On much of the hike, I was looking at the road in amazement and wondering how anybody drives on it -- but I could see fresh tire tracks, so I know they're there. Sure enough, on the hike back I saw a group of four very high clearance vehicles drive by. I wonder what the average speed is on the really rough parts -- faster or slower than hiking? Didn't see anyone else the whole morning until I got back to my car at the 25/25A junction; two Jeeps were just starting up the road to Mormon Grove. Enjoyable morning; mileage is real approximate, and posting this a few days later I don't remember how long it took. I'll just call it a good hike!
